  3. Summer 2012 Philosophy courses

    Summer 2012 Philosophy Seminar #2:

    CONTEMPORARY CRISIS OF REASON
    (Ph 206/320.4 - MA/PhD course)
    9:00-12:00 nn, SOM 111 (Ching Tan Room, School of Management, ADMU)
    from May 2-18 only

    This seminar will present various critiques of the modernist ideal of reason and modern scientific ideal. It will discuss the alternative positions that post-modern Western and Eastern philosophies are posing as challenges to modern rationality. From discourse theory and deconstruction, to phenomenology and Asian epistemologies, the professors of the department will discuss how the challenges to rationality have helped us to understand the reasonable and the meaningful in a way that is more than just to the multiplicity of rationalities.

    The class is open as a certificate course to the public. The fees are as follows: 

    Php 350 for walk-in participants per lecture
    Php 3,000 for the whole seminar with certificate of attendance.

    This is a seminar course that reflects on the various possible readings of the modern Philippine city. Applying the optics of phenomenology, hermeneutics, and deconstruction as well as a dialogue with literature, film, political science, sociology and anthropology, the lecturers from the Department of Philosophy will help the participants understand the rationality that defines this city. It will include actual engagement with the cultural heritage and lifeworld of the city in which we dwell.

    The class is open as a certificate course to the public. The fees are as follows:

    The Department of Philosophy,
    invites the Ateneo Community
    to a forum titled

    A Space Between Sides: Discoursing the Impeachment

    on Wednesday, 29 February 2012, 4:30 PM at CTC 105 (final venue).

    In this forum, the Department of Philosophy has invited Ms. Carmela Abao, of the Department of Political Science, School of Social Sciences and Atty. Christine Lao, an alumna of the Department of Philosophy and an advocate of judicial reform, to share their thoughts on the ongoing impeachment trial. With them, the faculty and the audience will engage in a shared reflection on the meaning of this event for the nation.

    The forum is open to the public and will also be recorded as part of the Philosophy Podcast Series.

  10. Philo Dept Mourns the Passing of Her First Alumnus

    This is to inform the university community that Mr. Salvador F. Bernal 
passed away lunch time yesterday (26 October 2011).  

Wake is at the Immaculate Concepcion, Cubao, starting today (27 
October 2011) at nine.  Funeral is still to be arranged.  

Please remember him in your prayers.



    Mr. Bernal graduated from the Ateneo de Manila with a B.S. in 
Philosophy, cum laude, in 1966. He received the medal for philosophy 
and the Mulry Award for creative writing. He taught briefly at the 
college and founded the Ateneo Drama Group.



    Mr. Bernal finished an MFA in Theatre Arts at Northwestern University 
in 1972. He returned to the Ateneo in 1973, as an instructor at the 
Communication Department. From 1975-1990 he was resident production 
designer of Ballet Philippines. Since 1994, he has been teaching with 
the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of the School of Humanities.

    A highly acclaimed designer, with some 300 productions across 
different genres of theater to his credit, Mr. Bernal was proclaimed 
National Artist for Theatre Design by the Republic of the Philippines 
in 2003.
